We all know that we are what we eat right?  But as a functional nutritionist, I take it one step further – we are what we can digest. You can eat all the healthy food in the world but if you’re not digesting properly, your body is not getting the nutrients it needs.

You may never think about your digestion as being directly related to weight loss, but it is!

Weight loss directly links to the balance of good bacteria in your gut.

Good bacteria are essential for a productive detox, proper digestion, and ultimately a healthy immune system.  Having good bacteria in your gut is a major preventative measure against colds, flu, digestive upset, weight gain, allergies and sinus issues.  Also, by adding good bacteria to your gut, you are improving your serotonin levels, a.k.a. the happy hormone.

According to a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition,

probiotics could help you lose weight.

Probiotics have all of these super powers:

  • Improve digestive functions
  • Improve liver function
  • Decrease toxicity
  • Decrease allergies
  • Improve adrenal function
  • Increase energy
  • Improve sleep
  • Eliminate or decrease acid reflux
  • Decrease bloating and gas
  • Improve absorption of nutrients and minerals

Many people suffer from digestive upset somewhere along the tract, whether it is acid reflux, indigestion, constipation, diarrhea or stomach cramps.  Incorporating probiotics into your daily regime will also reduce inflammation and belly bloat and improve the quality of your skin.

Sometimes digestive imbalances lead to leaky gut – a syndrome that occurs when the intestinal lining has been damaged, allowing food particles, toxins etc. to “leak” into your bloodstream, causing a histamine reaction. Leaky gut leads to inflammation throughout the body and can trigger additional food sensitivities.

Leading causes of leaky gut are:

  • A diet high in sugar
  • A diet high in processed foods
  • A diet low in minerals and healthy fats such as EFA’s
  • Toxicity in the foods you eat
  • Years of taking antibiotics or birth control
  • Eating foods that inflame the body

The key to reducing inflammation in the body is restoring the intestinal lining by adding high-quality gut-friendly probiotics to your diet.

Keep in mind that probiotics are not all created equally. Choosing your probiotic is similar to finding the perfect pair of good jeans or your favorite shoes. You have to find the one that works for your unique body.
